Teacher charged over teddy row

Nice way to confirm the simplistic stupidity of the religious mindset looking to find offence where none was intended. Even if offence was intended, does the Koran state a position on the naming of soft toys as part of a school project? Is the Islamic faith so shaky that a child's plaything could bring it crashing down in ruins?

Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out the Sudanese religious authorities are more worried about the notion of introducing children to the concept of democracy and free choice by allowing them to vote on the name. What lesson are they teaching this class of seven year olds about tolerance?

Is there anyone, anywhere willing to say anything positive about religion when it encourages this sort of medieval idiocy?

"What has happened was not haphazard or carried out of ignorance, but rather a calculated action and another ring in the circles of plotting against Islam," the Sudanese Assembly of the Ulemas said a statement.

It's so frustrating that something like this happens, just when you think there's a chance for Middle England to stop being so paranoid about anyone vaguely Muslim looking (even if they are Brazilian), then something like this comes along to drag us back into the stone age...

At the risk of offending people, if it's ok to call *people* Mohammed then why not an object? Some days I just don't understand this world...

The Sudanese authorities probably have otehr political motives, even if just to get people annoyed with the west and democracy so they don't notice their miserable conditions, but the teacher *was* naive and should have known there might be a problem. She could simply have told the class that being named after Mohammed is an honour for a little boy and probably teddy bears are not important enough for such an honour.
