It seems like ages since I last picked up a sword other than a katana, and that's probably because it is. The last workshop was five weeks ago and I haven't had a wednesday session for three weeks what with one thing and another, so it was a relief to get stuck in today and find that I hadn't gone completely rusty.

Rapier in the morning with some edge eight sequence followed by second and third intention attacks with Rachel, and Smith and Smurf from the Leeds chapter. I really do love the precision and subtlety of the rapier when used in this way with a big telegraphed cut turning into a lovely little cavatione. Yum.

We moved onto sabre in the afternoon and covered a lot of material from the basic cut lines, timed ripostes, eight parry positions, cut sequences and slips. We finally finished up with the punishing Soto Bosso which involves switching the foot positions into a very low parry in quarte to defend a low line attack and then flipping back into a lunge position whilst staying in the same place and hopefully twatting your opponent upside the head. Great fun, but I can feel my legs turning into jelly now ...
