I'm feeling very helpless and miserable at the moment.

Poor Biddy, in addition to being blind, now has a nasty respiratory tract infection. She's wheezing and her nose is blocked, so she can't smell her food and isn't eating much. We took her to the vets, so she's got antibiotics and eye drops for a scratched cornea as well.

She slept on the bed last night, so neither of us got much sleep listening to her breathing and making sure she was ok. I wish I could just wave a wand and make her better, but that isn't going to happen. I hope the antibiotics will do the trick, but to be honest I am dreading the worst.

She's dozing on my lap at the moment, exactly as she does most nights while I pootle around on the net.

I can't imagine being without her.

You could tempt her appetite with very strong smelling fish. One of our cats got shut in the grain drier tunnel for 8 hours when I was a kid. The vet told my mum he wouldn't survive because he couldn't smell his food, so wouldn't eat, his nose was smashed. Mum undeterred went out and bought the strongest smelling fishes she could, including anchovies, we were green from the smell of this damned fish for weeks, the cat however lived to be around 20.

Hugs

Thanks Sarah. We've tried her with some tinned fish, and she's had a little bit. Hopefully she'll eat some more when the antibiotics start working.

It's so sad when our pets get old and unwell.

It's lovely to think she has you to look after her though, and you love her so much that you will do the right thing by her, health wise.

*hugs*

Thanks Yoko. It's all the more difficult because this is the first time she's been ill in over fifteen years.

Thanks Nadia. The pain of seeing our pets grow old and sick is part of the price we pay for having them with us.

Hoping she improves the way Hugh has after our scares with him earlier this year. Animals sometimes have a way of confounding our worst fears. He's still going strong, though he's an old man now for a degu. Fingers crossed for Biddy. Sarah's suggestion sounds like a fine one (if Biddy likes fish)!

Thanks Amber. She still seems to perk up when I talk to her, but it's the not eating that's worrying me.

Thanks Rachel. She's never happy than when she's curled up on somebody's lap being stroked.

Its never nice when pets get old. All we can really do is try to look after them the best we can.
